Description
Dunes is a collection of three wheel thrown, altered and carved ceramic vessels. The works reflect the artist’s connection to the coastal environment. Memories of childhood on Tasmania’s coast combine with the artist’s life on the shores of Moreton Bay. Time and experiences merge, past and present blend into a continual coastline – a place of constant change and renewal. The vessels are carved with gestural marks, mirroring the constant movement of coastal grasses. Interiors reveal richly glazes surfaces, influenced by the colours and textures of dune vegetation.

About the Artist
Julie Martin studied visual arts at QUT in the 1990s, developing a multi-disciplinary practice into the 2000’s that included sculpture, installation, performance, and photography. Returning to art practice in recent years, Julie again merges sculptural forms and photography with a performative edge. Julie’s work acknowledges the long-standing influence of the ocean on her sense of self and personal history. Shapes emerge from memories of childhood on the Tasmanian East Coast. Kelp, sandy dunes, and the iridescence of collected shells. There is a sense of unease amid beauty, reflecting the artist’s complex relationship with the natural environment.
