Description
This painting, ‘You say the things that stop me aren’t real,’ celebrates the resilience of women, while also recognising how incapacitating the things that hold us back can be. It invites the viewer to see beauty and strength within the struggle, and also questions how “real” our barriers are to others. Sharlie seeks to tell the stories of women through her work, while often exploring themes of communication and the concept of “home”.

About Sharlie Wise
Sharlie is a mixed media artist who recently moved from Melbourne to defrost in Brisbane. She is currently obsessed with creating “Tavolette” (painstakingly tedious plaster tablets) with embedded vintage artefacts.
Sharlie began painting three years ago after the birth of her daughter and the death of her best friend. These two major life events made her realise that life was too fragile to sit in an office dreaming about painting all week—it was time to embrace the message etched into her ill-advised schoolies tramp stamp and live a “life worth painting”.
Sharlie’s paintings evoke a sense of wonder in the mundane, while also referencing vintage travel art and spiritual symbolism. The inclusion and reworking of vintage pieces speaks to the inner divide many of us have between a longing for home and the past versus a longing for adventure and the new.
